Privacy policy
What we collect, why we collect it, and how to get it deleted.
Last updated
This policy explains how Somali Press ("we", "us") handles personal information when you visit somali.press or subscribe to our newsletter.
What we collect
- Your email address, when you submit it through a subscribe form. This is the only piece of personal information we ask for.
- Your name, only if you choose to give it — for example when you email us a pitch or correction.
- Basic technical data that any web server receives, such as your IP address and browser type, used to deliver the site and protect it from abuse.
What we do with it
We use your email address for one purpose: sending you the Somali Press newsletter and occasional messages about it. We do not sell, rent or trade your information, and we do not share it with advertisers.
Where it is stored
Subscriber records are stored in our content management system, which we operate. Our site is served by a hosting provider that processes requests on our behalf. Both are bound to protect your data and to process it only on our instructions.
Cookies and analytics
We do not set any cookies. We do not use advertising cookies, and we do not track you across other websites. If we introduce privacy-respecting analytics in future, we will update this page before doing so.
What we store on your device
When you subscribe, we save a single value in your browser's local storage so the site stops showing you signup prompts you no longer need:
somali-press:subscribed— the date you subscribed.
We chose local storage over a cookie deliberately. A cookie is sent to our server with every request you make, which means it would appear in server logs; this value never leaves your device unless you send it, and nothing on the site sends it. It is not an identifier, it cannot be read by other websites, and it is not used for analytics or advertising.
It is entirely under your control. Clearing your browser's site data for somali.press removes it, and the signup prompts come back. Removing it does not unsubscribe you — your subscription lives in our system, not in your browser, and the unsubscribe link in any issue is what ends it. The reverse is also true: unsubscribing does not clear this value, so if the prompts stay hidden after you unsubscribe, clear your site data.
How long we keep it
We keep your email address until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it. Every newsletter includes an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing takes effect immediately.
Your rights
You can ask us to show you the information we hold about you, correct it, or delete it entirely. If you are in the UK, EU or a jurisdiction with comparable rules, you also have the right to object to processing and to lodge a complaint with your data protection authority. To exercise any of these, email hi@somali.press and we will respond within 30 days.
Children
The newsletter is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information.
Changes
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page. Material changes affecting subscribers will also be announced in the newsletter.
